Premature baby family faces crisis in the U.S.

Alder Fornecker, a miracle baby, almost didn’t survive when he was born at 23 weeks in the U.S. Gina Fornecker was visiting family in North Carolina, nearly 4,000 miles away from her home in Cambridge, U.K., when she went into an emergency labor. The family faced a potential financial crisis, as well as health crisis, since they did not have insurance in the United States. Emily Wakeman travels to Cambridge, U.K. to tell the Fornecker’s story about their incredible journey to celebrating Alder’s first birthday.

Emily Wakeman is a senior broadcast and political science double major at UNC-Chapel Hill. She currently anchors Carolina Week, the 30-minute newscast at UNC. She spent the summer reporting on national political news in Washington D.C. as a Collegiate Associate Intern for Fox News Channel. She has also interned for the CBS affiliate, WBTV News, in Charlotte and for a member of Parliament during her time studying abroad in London, U.K. After graduation, she hopes to pursue her passions for investigative journalism and politics by entering the field of political correspondence in Washington D.C.
