Gimghoul Garden Lives On Despite Loss

Broadcast by Drew Kurzman; Radio by Jessica Coates; Design by Emily Helton

Watch a timeless profile of a 101-year-old twin who has survived her sister in the beautifully gardened home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The story dives into the garden’s effect on the community and how the twin is adjusting to her twin sister and roommate’s passing earlier this year.

“It’s your way of being part of the world. As long as you garden, you’ll never be lonely. You’ll always have friends. You’ll make new friends. You don’t outgrow them.”

-Bernice Wade, 101-year-old Gimghoul Road gardener

Hear Bernice Wade talk about her sister, Barbara Stiles, and the sisters’ lifelong relationship. Stiles died at home on June 15. This year, Wade plans to host a special tulip planting to honor her sister’s memory the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Learn more about the sisters’ home. Bernice Wade and her husband bought the home on Gimghoul Road in 1944. The home is a Sears Modern Home, ordered from a Sears catalog in 1923 and built as part of a plan to pay for the Gimghoul Castle.
