Showing cows is hard work. Sustaining a dairy farm in Chatham County, North Carolina, is even harder.

Dairy farming has been a way of life for several generations in Chatham County, but times are changing. From 2017 to 2018, 6.5 percent of U.S. dairy farms went out of business. As the dairy industry has been in an ongoing slump, many families have found dairy an unsustainable endeavor.

Yet, many young people still gather and compete in the Junior Dairy show at the annual Silk Hope Old Fashioned Farmers Day event.
